Each chakra effects the spirit, the mind, and the body in some way. The root chakra is our main connection to the earth and our receptive or feminine side. It is responsible for grounding and survival. Physically, the root chakra rules the legs, feet, and spine. Physiologically, the root chakra effects the adrenal glands. When your root chakra is balanced, you are grounded in who you are and lack fear and insecurity. The root chakra is located at the base of your spine.

The color or aura associated with the root chakra is red. You will want to assess your connection to the color red. Is red primarily in your home décor or your wardrobe or in the foods you eat? What emotion does the color red ignite in you? Red in excess is an indicator of fear. The color red can also be an indicator of power and confidence.

Mindful Meditation

Today as in “Sunday,” walk barefoot and let your feet touch the earth. If you do not want to be barefoot, take a walk in a garden or in a park, or even through a wooded area. As you walk around barefoot or otherwise, embrace the earth and notice the colors around you. Feel the air on your skin, feel the earth on your feet, and notice the smells. Be aware of your breath and aware of your thoughts. Understand that your mind will certainly wander. When it does, show yourself compassion and just resume reciting an affirmation.


I am grounded.
I belong in this world.
I feel safe and secure.
I have all that I need.
I am at peace with my surroundings.

You can recite any one or all of the affirmations at any point during your day. When you wake up, during lunch, or right before bed are the easiest for me because it’s easier to get into routine.


Obviously, root vegetables are what you will want to eat. Beets, tomatoes, red berries, onion, garlic, and any other red food is encouraged. Next week I will go more in depth with ways to be mindful as you consider what you eat and depending on my energy level, I may even throw in a link to a recipe.
