Namaste November: Mindful Eating

Last week I gave you a brief list of foods that correspond to each chakra. When you set your intentions on balancing or awakening a particular chakra, incorporating those foods in your diet adds another layer of connection to the divinity within. Mindful eating offers us an opportunity to have a similar connection. The same way in which mindfulness meditation allows us to connect with the sensations in our bodies and mind, mindful eating allows us to gain control of your eating habits.
As Americans, we tend to just eat. We eat without tasting, we eat without considering what we are putting into our bodies. We eat subconsciously; talking, working, walking, simply not paying attention. Perhaps we don’t need as much food as we thought. Perhaps my tummy doesn’t agree (yes I said tummy). When we decide to eat with attention on our food and our body, not only can we taste and savor the food, we also have the opportunity to listen to our body’s response as we consume.
For the remainder of the month, I invite you choose one meal per day that you will eat mindfully. No talking, walking, texting, or anything that will distract you. As you eat, taste the flavors, feel the textures. How does it smell? Truly chew your food before you swallow and finish one bite before you take another.
For the first week, simply notice what motivated you to eat this meal. Was it hunger or an emotional response to something? The following week, notice your thoughts as you eat. Do nothing with the thought but notice it. Then, as you progress, send the thought away without judgment and continue to focus on what is in front of you. The goal is to become mindful of your patterns. Please share anything you notice!
